ROADSIDE ATTRACTION SIGN PROJECT
In the early 2000s, Hampton Inn’s Save a Landmark program launched a 66-day caravan along the Mother Road to highlight various sites along the famous highway. The tour was responsible for various cleanup projects and the installation of “Roadside Attraction” signs.
REPLACE MISSING OR FADED SIGNS
These signs, nearly 25 years old now, have worn and weathered over the years. Some have even gone missing entirely. The New Mexico Route 66 Association is excited to announce a project to help replace these missing or faded signs along the route across New Mexico.
NEW SIGNS AVAILABLE
We are also offering new signs throughout our state! If you own a business, attraction, landmark, or historic site along Route 66 and want your own Roadside Attraction sign, they are available to purchase directly from the New Mexico Route 66 Association.
This project is open to sites directly on an alignment of Historic Route 66 or within 500 feet at major intersections.
Signage for “Route 66 adjacent” sites outside of this corridor will be considered on a case-by-case basis with the addition of a “Side Trip” graphic placed on the left side of the interpretive sign.
Sites must have historic significance though there is no specific age requirement. The upper Roadside Attraction sign is identical across all installations. The interpretive text on the lower sign will be determined through dialogue between the association and the applicant; space is limited, and we want to ensure the content matches the others along the Route 66 corridor. All signs will include the New Mexico Route 66 Association logo on the right side and our website at the bottom, as shown in example. Membership in the New Mexico Route 66 Association is not required but is preferred.
All applications will go through a review and approval process by the association. Once signs are approved, payment of $360 (business member price), or $420 (non-business member price) is required before fabrication begins. Mounting hardware is not included though holes will be pre-drilled for whatever mounting solution you decide.
All proceeds go towards the association’s work to preserve and promote Route 66 throughout New Mexico. If you’re interested in helping with this worthy project, making a donation, or want to make sure your business is included, contact us or use the application below.
You may also contact New Mexico Route 66 Association president (also your New Mexico Representative Board Member of the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership), Melissa Lea Beasley at [email protected] or 505-803-6966.
