Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership Launches 2026 Grant Program for Small Businesses and Attractions June 30, 2026  Applications for the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership's 2026 Preservation and Economic Development Grant Program open on Thursday, July 2nd. The grant program is an official Route 66 Centennial Activity, as designated by the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission.
The program assists businesses and attractions along historic Route 66 that are seeking to remain in operation, reopen, preserve and restore historic properties, improve visitor experiences, expand services, or launch new ventures that contribute to the vitality of Route 66 communities. The 2026 grant cycle will award $35,000 in funding with 24 grants of up to $2,500 available to eligible applicants. American Express funds 10 of the grants available. Four grants are specifically designated for independent auto repair shops and mechanics operating along Route 66 with funding provided by Bosch Wiper Blades. "The businesses and attractions that line Route 66 are the backbone of the visitor experience and play an essential role in preserving the road's unique history and sense of place," said Bill Thomas, Chairman of the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership and Commissioner of the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission. "These grants help ensure that the people and places that make Route 66 special can continue to serve their communities and welcome travelers for generations to come." Eligible applicants include independently owned businesses and attractions physically located on a Route 66 alignment or operating within a Route 66 community. Funding can be used for a variety of projects, including equipment purchases, building repairs, signage restoration, accessibility improvements, website upgrades, marketing initiatives, workforce development, sustainability efforts, and historic preservation projects that maintain the integrity of Route 66 landmarks. Preference is given to small, independently owned businesses and attractions that contribute to the history, identity, and cultural significance of their communities, particularly those located in historic buildings or serving historically underserved populations. Applications are reviewed by an independent grant review committee comprised of representatives from across the Route 66 corridor. Applications are accepted from July 2.
