Do you ever wonder, "How did all of these Route 66 Centennial plans, events, projects, and celebrations for our nation begin"?
They began with the formation of the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership.
Established in 2016, with the support of the National Park Service and the World Monuments' Fund, The Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership’s mission is to revitalize and sustain Route 66 as a national and international icon through partnerships focused on promotion, preservation, research & education, and economic development.
Since the first meeting in 2017, the Road Ahead Partnerships board members, representing each of the eight states, has gathered annually for in-person meetings, and held 3 additional zoom meetings each year while assisting Route 66 communities in preparation for this prestigious celebration of the Mother Road.
The New Mexico Route 66 Association is proud to be a part of this group since its inception. Association President, Melissa Beasley-Lee, has been the dedicated board member representative for New Mexico since that first meeting in 2017. New Mexico proudly hosted that first meeting in Albuquerque's Old Town.

Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership holds its first meeting in 2017
On May 23rd, 2017, the Albuquerque Journal ran an Associated Press article by Russell Contreras titled, "Losing Their Kicks? Funds For Route 66 Towns May Be At Risk." Similar stories ran in papers and on TV news across the country detailing the sunset of legislation which authorized the National Park Service to administer the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, which was created by congressional legislation in 1999.
The National Park Service (NPS) administered matching fund preservation grants that made possible the restoration of properties and neon signs in each state traversed by Route 66. In New Mexico, some of those projects included the Blue Swallow Motel sign in Tucumcari, El Comedor's "Rotosphere" in Moriarty and the sign and building front of the Lexington Hotel in Gallup. NPS also facilitated Route 66 oral history projects in partnership with UNM's English Department as well as providing access to historical and informational research materials for scholars and tourists. Many people were justifiably alarmed at the news of the sunset of preservation legislation, but beginning in 2014, in anticipation of the de-funding of their programs, NPS along with Route 66 stakeholders and the World Monuments Fund facilitated the creation of 'The Road Ahead Partnership" whose mission it is "to revitalize and sustain Route 66 as a national and international icon, for the benefit of all Route 66 communities, travelers, and businesses/attractions, through collaborative partnerships focused on promotion, preservation, research/education, and economic development." Pending legislation monitored and supported by The Road Ahead Partnership includes HR801, a bill introduced into Congress by Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL] that would designate Route 66 as a National Historic Trail. Bill Thomas, chairman of The Road Ahead Partnership, said, "With the impending sunset of the NPS Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program in 2019, it is important that Route 66 gain this designation." |
|
Other Legislation includes HR66, introduced by Rep. Rodney Davis [R-IL], which would establish a Route 66 100th Anniversary Celebration Commission. Says Thomas, "The Mother Road's 100th birthday will be in 2026 and we want to be prepared for a grand celebration." Dear Route 66 Business Members,
As you may know, a New Mexico State Route 66 Centennial Coordination Group was formed in September 2023 under executive order of the governor. The Route 66 Association was not given a seat on this board. The New Mexico Route 66 Association President, Melissa Beasley-Lee has been a board member of the group that created the groundwork for the National Route 66 Centennial preparations since 2017.
She would be the only one on this state board with seven years of knowledge regarding what has already been laid out, what is currently taking place, and what steps are now needed on a state level leading up to and throughout 2026. She is also the only member who solely represents the businesses and communities of Route 66 throughout our state.
For her not to have a seat at this state level board raises a serious question – Why is she, and the Route 66 Businesses she represents not being invited to continue being a part of the centennial planning.
There will be a meeting at the state capitol building Tuesday, December 12th, to vote on the formation and rules of this group. This meeting is open to the public and Melissa, as well as other association board members are planning to attend and voice their concerns about the states choice of members and plans.
The New Mexico Route 66 Association feels it is vital that business members attend this meeting as this committee will be the who, what and where that our tax dollars will be spent leading up to and throughout the Route 66 Centennial. This is a once in a 100-year opportunity that can greatly affect the prosperity of your business.
We hope you will plan to be present at this meeting on December 12th to let your voice be heard personally for your business, and to request that the NM Route 66 Association be given a seat on this coordination group board.

A note from Melissa Lea Beasley-Lee, President of the New Mexico Route 66 Association and Board of Director for the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership, as it relates to Route 66 in New Mexico:
Within the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership, the Centennial Commission announced on December 28, 2022 with members appointed by President Biden, is considered the “National” Commission. In addition to this commission, each of the eight Route 66 States will form its own “State” Centennial Commission composed of members who reflect the interests, history, and importance of the communities along Route 66 in their state.
Once our state commission is established, we will obtain funds available to complete several key projects on Route 66 throughout our state. We want to make sure New Mexico Route 66 is shining for its 100th Anniversary.
The New Mexico Route 66 Association is currently working to set up the New Mexico State Commission to begin working on plans to ring in this once-in-a-lifetime event! The New Mexico Route 66 Association is proud to be representing Route 66 Businesses and communities as a member of this Commission.
Below is a timeline of information to keep you up to date on the latest advancements of the New Mexico “State” Centennial Commission formation. Hopefully soon, the bill will be passed, signed into law, and gathering its members. Then it’s off to getting things ready for New Mexico to celebrate 100 years of Route 66!

Jen Paul Schroer was appointed as Secretary of Tourism by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in January 2019. Since her appointment as Tourism Secretary, Schroer spearheaded the landmark Lodgers’ Tax legislation, which brought more equity to New Mexico’s lodging industry and created more channels for local and state tax revenue. Schroer also successfully advocated for a $19.6 million budget for marketing and tourism promotion for FY23, the largest-ever amount for the agency. Schroer also guided a successful refresh of the New Mexico True brand and entry into the Los Angeles market. Prior to her appointment to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Cabinet as Tourism Secretary, Schroer served as the President & CEO of New Mexico Hospitality Association, where she led the merger of two state level trade associations and went on to pass key legislation that helped to boost tourism development for her state.
