On October 6, 2022, the Route 66 Association of New Mexico kicked off its Ambassador Program in Tucumcari. This program teams the association and its members up with local businesses and residents to clean up and beautify abandoned locations along Route 66 throughout New Mexico. Our project was the abandon wall at Outlaw Tattoo.
Thank you to Chase Waters of Del’s Restaurant for covering most of the painting supplies cost. Thank you to New Mexico Route 66 Association board member and Tucumcari Mainstreet director, Connie Loveland. She also purchased supplies for the project, assisted in planning and helped with the grunt work.
Thank you to Larry Smith of Motel Safari for donating the paint sprayer. It was given to him a few years ago to paint the motel. He never used it, and it sat in his storage. A golden rule we forgot... before using something like this after sitting in the desert climate unused for years, change out all the seals before attempting to use. Mike had paint all over him and the floor, but he trudged on to finish it. (No seals to be found in Tucumcari and we were on a time crunch.)
Thank you to neighboring resident of Outlaw Tattoo, Dwayne Domi and long time resident Anthony Anaya for their help, the use of their tools and the dump truck. We definitely could not have finished this project without you.
Last but not least, thank you to New Mexico Route 66 Association president Melissa Beasley-Lee and association board member Mike Lee for putting this project together, planning and participating.
