Honorary Trustees appointed to Association
As the New Mexico Route 66 Association has grown during the past couple
of years, its roles and responsibilities have changed. The challenges of
raising funds for new projects and programs, advocacy with elected officials
and governmental stakeholders in Preservation and Corridor Management of
Historic Route 66 take varying kinds of skills, experience and contacts. The
Directors have created a new position within the Association to assist us
with the challenges ahead: an Honorary Trustee.
The position of Honorary Trustee is rarely appointed. Nominees have
shown past public dedication to the efforts of preservation for our heritage and
culture related to Historic Route 66. Their name and reputation lend
credence to the efforts of the Association and its mission. The Directors are proud
to announce that the following four civic and public leaders have accepted our
nomination as Honorary Trustee.
U.S. Senator Pete Domenici
Senator Domenici has been tireless in his efforts to federally fund
preservation and corridor management of Historic Route 66. It was Senator
Domenici's legislation in 1991 that funded the U.S. Interior Department,
through its Park Services division, the national study completed in 1994:
?Special Resource Study: Route 66.? Based on the U.S. Park Service's
recommendations, Senator Domenici has worked with state and national Route
66 organizations to designate (S-292), under the Department of the Interior,
Historic Route 66 as "America's Main Street" and fund Corridor Management.
S-292 passed in the Senate in March and was carried by U.S. Representative
Heather Wilson as HR66 in the House.
Governor Bruce King
Former Governor Bruce King and his wife Alice joined us on our Historic
Route 66 road trip in New Mexico in 1992. He became a major supporter of
legislation protecting and interpreting Historic Route 66 in New Mexico.
During his tenure he signed bills authorizing the funding of the Historic
Preservation Division 1992 study by Dr. David Kammer, "The Historic and
Architectural Resources of Route 66 in New Mexico," funding for the New
Mexico Route 66 Association's Corridor Management study in 1992 through the
Department of Tourism titled "New Mexico Route 66: A Plan For Its
Revitalization." In 1994 he signed the bill designating Historic Route 66 a
State Scenic Byway.
State Senator Gloria Howes
State Senator Gloria Howes has been a strong ally in New Mexico
sponsoring legislation to interpret, manage and preserve Historic Route 66.
She has sponsored bills authorizing the funding of the Historic Preservation
Division's 1992 study by Dr. David Kammer, "The Historic and Architectural
Resources of Route 66 in New Mexico," funding for the New Mexico Route 66
Association's Corridor Management study in 1992 through the Department of
Tourism titled "New Mexico Route 66: A Plan For Its Revitalization," and in
1994 she sponsored the bill designating Historic Route 66 a State Scenic
Byway.
In 1995 she sponsored legislation which provided seed funding for the
initial phase of creating and installing Historic Trail Markers. In 1999
State Senator Howes co-sponsored with state Representative Gail Beam
legislation dual-designating the various renumbered state operated portions
of former U.S. Highway 66 as New Mexico's Historic Route 66. The designation
requires the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department to
complete the Trail Marker program, and all future maps to include the
Historic designation.
J. Edson Way, Ph.D.
J. Edson Way is the state Cultural Affairs Officer overseeing the
divisions of Historic Preservation, New Mexico Arts, the state Museum
system, and the state Library involving the coordination and integration of, to name
a few areas, New Mexico's history, archaeology, art, cultural heritage and
historic preservation. He has become a public advocate for Historic Route
66?s inclusion into the vast array of cultural and heritage programs of the
state. As the 75th Anniversary of Historic Route 66 approaches, Dr. Way's
efforts to assist the Association to help keep informed and coordinate the
resources dedicated to Historic Route through the state's various
departments will be a tremendous asset.
