| The Santa Fe mystique carried over into the National Trust
Historic Conference. On Friday, October 17, Author Michael Wallis made a
large hit with 175 diners at Inn of Loretto. His unique style of storytelling
captivated the attention of every of every person there. Pictured from left

for coming Michael! |

The La Fonda Hotel centered around a large courtyard with umbrella-covered
tables surrounding a tiled fountain. During afternoons, families of the
contractors and peddlers crowded the courtyard. My sisters, Joye, Dottie,
and I sat with Mother as we sipped our favorite drink, an orangeade, and
listened to a trio of Mexican guitarists playing and singing their native
songs. Meanwhile, the contractors and dealers began to gather in the Cantina
for refreshments as they discussed building roads and selling equipment.
After dinner, everyone, including the children, congregated in the New
Mexican Room to dance the La Varsuviana, as the orchestra with each member
wearing a large sombrero, as the group played guitars and trumpets. We sang
along to La Cucaracha and Guadalajara. Those were different times, and
while the La Fonda offered its own atmosphere, the most important glue holding
together the contractors and equipment dealers - people who helped build
NM Route 66 and other important roads - was the comradeship. This indeed
was the mystique. Santa Fe and its La fonda Hotel complemented that mystique.
(Nate Skousen, Jr. worked with his father from the late å40s,
through the å70s, much of it on Route 66 and later I-40. He enjoys
writing about these experiences.) |
