Advisors and Directors Meet
The New Mexico Route 66 Association has two Boards: the Board of Directors elected by the membership and a Board of Advisors, which the directors appoint. The Board of Advisors was created through the New Articles and Bylaws passed at our November membership meeting. The Advisors will help to represent the organization from all geographical regions and to complement the Directors in cultural, race, ethnicity and skills.
The first joint meeting of the two Boards took place at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, on Saturday, March 21. The group spent the day brainstorming and planning ways to encourage continued growth of our organization. They focused on suggested activities for the coming year which will be presented at the annual meeting on Saturday, July 18, following a noon luncheon at Joseph's Restaurant in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.
In
Memoriam
Photographer William J. Lucas, who chronicled New Mexico's Route 66, died September 14 at age 71. We salute his memorable black and white photographs of the Mother Road, depicting it as a migration route. According to his son Bret, Lucas was fascinated with the strange mix of billboards and architecture along the road.
"I never set out to ådo' Route 66," Lucas said in an '86 interview. "Over the years, responding to nostalgic twinges and endowed otherwise romantic notions of this 'Main Street of America,' I would occasionally take snapshots of the things remembered, spurred on by the knowledge they would soon disappear." Lucas taught photography at the University of New Mexico from 1977 until 1988. He is survived by wife of 49 years, Joye, who continues as an active member of our association, in addition to one daughter and three sons.
He was instrumental in setting up a repository in the Center for Southwest Research of UNM's Zimmerman Library. For more information, contact Kathlene Ferris at 277-7172.
If you are interested in employment in either the convenience store or the service station at Clines Corners Operating Company, please contact Sharon at (505) 472-5488 and make an appointment to come by and talk with her in person. Housing for employees is limited but available at this historic stopover on Route 66, 60 miles east of Albuquerque.

UPCOMING
EVENT!

Make plans to attend the National Route 66 Museum Celebration and Grand Opening June 5th and 6th at Elk City, Oklahoma. The honorable Mary Fallin, Lieutenant Governor, State of Oklahoma, will speak. It is hoped that representatives from all the Route 66 Associations will be present.

Upcoming New Mexico Route 66 Association Meetings:

Mark Saturday, April 18, 1998 as a date to be in Gallup at the Ranch Kitchen, 3001 West Highway 66. We plan to gather about 11:30 a.m., visit and have lunch. John Marbury, owner and member, will be there to greet us. Ed Jungbluth, who recently moved to Gallup from Grants and represents the Gallup Convention & Visitors Bureau, will also be there to give us a welcome.
After our meeting, Sally Noe, who knows Gallup better than anyone, will take us on a walking tour of downtown Gallup. Sally's parents moved to Gallup when she was one month old - the same year that Route 66 was officially designated. She has taught history at Gallup High School and at the University of New Mexico's Gallup branch. In addition to the history, Noe knows about pawn, architecture, why the streets are

narrow, why they're spread out along the tracks, and why buildings in Gallup are built of bricks rather than adobe. Plan to be there.

We'll meet Saturday, July 18, 1998, at 11:30 a.m. at Joseph's Restaurant, 865 Will Rogers Drive in Santa Rosa. Joseph, Christina, and their three children send a big hello. For anyone planning to stay over, please call Cyndie Bell at the Ramada Limited (505) 472-4800, or Maria Elena Ross at the Silver Moon Motel (505) 472-3162.
