(continued from cover page) businesses along the old highway. But little mention is made of the men and women who built Route 66 - people like Nate Skousen and the mule skinners and heavy equipment operators who worked alongside him.

But if you ask old-timers along the trail - from (in the words of the song) "Flagstaff, AZ, don't forget Winona; Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino..." - they'll tell you the people they remember are the men and women who built that famous road.

It seems fitting that the builders of Route 66 be recognized by erecting a monument dedicated to their memory in or near Albuquerque. If you support this idea, please indicate your support by contacting the New Mexico Route 66 Association, or e-mail: SUEMANN_NMROUTE66@prodigy.net

Award Recognizes
Route 66 Creativity

The first Cyrus Avery Award for Creativity was awarded at the California Route 66 Museum's "Kicks for Kids" art show, April 20, in Victorville, CA.

The new award program was developed by the National Historic Route 66 Federation to honor individuals for outstanding creativity depicting Route 66. It will be awarded periodically as candidates are nominated. The award's goal is to increase interest in and recognition of the Mother Road throughout the world. Virtually every form of creativity can be nominated, including books, articles, paintings, photography, songs, sculptures and more.
The winner of the first award is 12 year old Sarah Bell from Huntington Beach, CA. Her crayon illustration depicts a mirthful red car traveling along the old road, looking as though it is enjoying every mile.
The 6th grader is home schooled and an accomplished pianist. She's also a self-proclaimed history buff.
If you are aware of an exceptional Route 66-oriented creative effort, contact David Knudson, National Historic Route 66 Federation, P. O. Box 423, Tujunga, CA, e-mail: national66@themall.net or fax 818-352-7232.

In Memory

On Wednesday, January 22, 1997, Jerry Richard, the Executive Vice-President of Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona, was killed in a plane crash near Bagdad, AZ. He was flying a single-engine Cessna from Deer Valley, AZ to his home in Kingman. For ten years he had served the association, first in pioneering its startup and continuing to fuel its success with his enthusiastic promotion of Route 66. New Mexico Route 66 Association extends sincere condolences to our neighbors to the west.

"He was a founding member and beneficial in getting the Route 66 Museum together, " said Anita Leeming, secretary-treasurer. She said it has been difficult, but everyone worked with renewed efforts to make the 10th Annual Route 66 Fun Run Weekend in April one of the most successful yet, with 718 cars entered. If you are passing through Kingman, stop in for a visit, or check out their web site at www.azrt66.com.
