quick flight to meet with him revealed a man sincerely interested in drafting a Route 66 preservation bill based on the study.

The study proposes five alternative suggestions, ranging from a massive preservation project to doing almost nothing. After another series of meetings, one with the National Trust for Historic Preservation legislative advisors in Chicago, Alternative Number 5 seemed to be the most realistic place to start a Route 66 preservation plan.
This alternative offers a balanced approach to maintaining the character of Route 66 and providing historic preservation of the highway and its associated structures.
Route 66 would receive national recognition through designation by Congress as a national heritage highway. This designation would acknowledge both the historic aspects of Route 66 and the evolving roles it continues to play. The hallmarks of this alternative would be flexibility over time and partnerships between the federal government and private organizations to preserve important Route 66 resources.
The alternative also establishes a 10-year time limit for federal involvement. At the end of a designated period(s), the direction and degree of the national level Route 66 management would be re-evaluated.
Presently, we are at another crossroads. My regular phone calls (pesterings) to Gary Ziehe always get a pleasant response from him and an assurance that the bill will be drafted. However, he also reports that his team has only had time to put out fires - not time to write bills.
Because our offices are in California, we do not have the constituent leverage with Senator Domenici that you New Mexicans enjoy. Your letters to the Senator, urging him to draft the bill, will have considerable weight.
One thing I know about Washington - the squeaky wheel gets oiled. Please help us squeak.

If you want to be heard in Washington regarding this legislation, please sign the enclosed letter with your name and the town you live in on the bottom and mail to the address listed, or fax Senator Domenici at (202) 224-7371.

Thirteen members went UNDERGROUND!!! in Grants, NM on Thursday, July 10, 1997, courtesy of Ed Jungbluth of Cibola County Chamber of Commerce. After the tour, we met for lunch and a general meeting at the newly remodeled Monte Carlo Restaurant. We heartily recommend a stopover at the museum, located an elevator ride down from the COC office. Also, we wish Ed and his family good luck as they move to Gallup. Ed is already working at the Gallup Visitor and Convention Center and can be reached at (505) 863-3841. We hope to have a Route 66 meeting there next year, but if youre passing through, Ed asks you to stop in for a visit.
