Tucumcari To Host Route 66 Festival
A big parade will kick off the Route 66 Festival in Tucumcari, August 14-17, 1996. Prince Tocom and Princess Kari will host a chile cook off, craft fair, gospel night and dance with music by the Fireballs. Dorothy Kvols of the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce said, "Ya'll come..." "Historic Ole 66" Theme of State Fair Parade
"Invitations have gone out to all towns along Route 66 to enter floats in the parade on Saturday, September 7," said Chris Cordova, New Mexico State Fair Public Relations Director. Starting at 8:45 AM, the parade will travel east on Central from Louisiana to Eubank. "Historic Ole 66," the theme for the State Fair Parade, will give New Mexicans a chance to show off and participate in this tribute to the legendary highway. "We're still getting and accepting entries," said Janet Clark, Assistant Director. Anyone wanting information can call her at 265-1791, ext. 217. Applications can be picked up at the State Fair Entry Office and will be accepted until Aug. 23. Entries will be juried by the parade committee.

"Run to the Heartland" Festival
Be a part of the huge Route 66, 70th anniversary celebration in Vega, Texas October 11-13, 1996. Nearly every Route 66 celebrity will be there. Events include the Federation's Steinbeck Awards Banquet, street dance, calf roping exhibition, product sale, Texas size barbecue, big Route 66 products raffle, car show, art show and more! Quay-Z Quilters Show
The Quay-Z Quilters of Tucumcari invite anyone heading east to "Run to the Heartland" at Vega, Texas or anyone heading west to Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta to stop in for a visit at the 2nd Annual Tucumcari Quilt Show. Hours are 9 AM to 6 PM in the Quay County Fair Barn October 11-13. Admission is $1 per person. To get to the Fair Barn, take Camino del Coronado exit from I-40 and drive a half mile north to the large building on the east side of the street. "We have lots more motel rooms here than in Vega, and we are about 75 miles from there," said Dorothy Kvols of the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce. Members from the New Mexico Route 66 Association can meet in Tucumcari Friday night before going on. Interested? Call Dorothy at (505) 461-1694.
