Welcome To New Members
We welcome the National Historic Route 66 Federation, which has been
most supportive of our organization. Their latest quarterly includes an
article entitled, "66 Diner, Better Than Ever," written by Sue
Mann. David Knudson, Executive Director, wishes us success in our venture
to jump start the New Mexico Route 66 Association. We also welcome the
Downtown Action Team of Albuquerque, under the leadership of Rich Williams.
This newly formed organization helped businesses interact successfully in
the Summerfest program and has worked with Public Service Company of New
Mexico to complete a lighting audit. They also assisted in adding trolleys
to connect Nob Hill, Old Town, the aquarium, botanical gardens and the zoo.
In addition to working with the homeless campaign, DAT is assisting with
the downtown Christmas decorations. Eric Szeman of Route 66 Pedicabs
supports our association through his busy work peddling people around downtown
Albuquerque, especially points of interest in Old Town. Betty DeSoto, manager
of Villa de Cubero (originally built in 1936 on Route 66), is working on
the history of the Cubero area and would appreciate hearing from anyone
interested. Ed Auten of Edgewood, N.M. said he is interested in Route 66
because, "It's almost as old as I am." Daniel Beam of Edgewood
sums up the thoughts of many members when he said he joined the association
"to bring interest to our remaining Route 66 area and to protect it,
while having fun driving it regularly." Francis Bevans, born in
southeast |
Oklahoma and now living in Delaware, worked on the Rock Island
Railroad. He travelled on Route 66 to California in an old Ford in 1923.
He and his wife, both 72, belong to all Route 66 Associations in each of
the eight states and are making plans to travel the whole route. Peter and
Sandra Prescott of Gardiner, Maine are planning to drive the entire route
in a 1952 Ford convertible. Steven Rider of Albany, New York has driven
the entire length and enjoys the Southwest. Ron Edlund agreed with many
when he said, "I'm glad you're back in business. I have waited a long
time for this day. Congratulations!" Kay Riecke of Rio Rancho, N.M.
is interested in our interaction with other state Route 66 organizations
and Joanna Bruns of Albuquerque has decorated her home using the Route 66
theme. Albert J. Saladini of Montpellier, France is a French TV journalist
and has completed a book entitled The Route 66 with Harley Davidson, complete
with 300 photos. He was recently in New Mexico, working on a movie for French
television. Susan Simon of Moriarty, N.M. said, "66 might be the Mother
Road, but it's Moriarty's main street." Bill and Mary Watts of Los
Lunas, N.M. live a few minutes south of where original Route 66 made its
westward turn. Welcome to each of you, former members as well as new,
from France to Hawaii to Australia. This is an exciting time to take part
in the renaissance of Route 66. Please continue to keep in touch. |
