Urban Enhancement Trust Grant Awarded

The Association applied for, and received, a $10,000 grant from the City of Albuquerque's Urban Enhancement Trust Fund. Spearheaded by the hard work of Director Dorothy Skousen Black and her brother Nate Skousen Jr., the grant is for researching the names of the construction workers who created the original alignments for Historic Route 66 in New Mexico. A committee has been set up for oversight of the project: Dorothy Black Chair, Sherri Brueggemann, David Riley and Nate Skousen, Jr. Upon completion of the research the Association

intends to apply for additional funds to create a memorial to those workers. The Skousens' father was a construction engineer for Historic Route 66 and Nate Jr.'s stories of the roads' development have appeared in the Association’s newsletter over the last few years (see our web site for past issues).

Anyone with information or photographs pertaining to the construction and the workers on Historic Route 66 in New Mexico should contact Dorothy Black at (505) 884-8649, or send materials to our Association address.
