A Sixty Six Story

Museum of New Mexico Announces 75th Anniversary Events

All my uncles worked the route, some at the Club Cafe, Tiffens, and Medley's as chefs, and my love for cooking comes from them. I would frequent the Club Cafe (coming in through the back door) where my uncles would have homemade soup ready for my mom; always dressed in white with chef's hats they would put an apron on me and have me fetch ingredients until they were done with ma's order.

I have fond memories of 66, having been on its path many years. Sometimes I was going away to college or to work in New York. On the latter occasion I was driving a 1964 Chevy Nova II that broke down in Groom, Texas. That didn't stop me. I began to hitchhike, met a friend and we drove in his 'Cuda all the way to Nashville. I then hitched a ride to the Big Apple, determined that this boy who had grown up on the mightiest of interstates was seasoned enough to tackle the rest of the Mother Road. I was never lost as long as I knew that if I got on the route I would eventually end up home; to me it was the path well worn and familiar.

Historic Buckaroo Motel for Sale!

When traveling to Tucumcari one of the great motel stops is the old Buckaroo Motel. Built in 1952 it has been well kept over the years. Its original cowboy sign is still glowing in the twilight ready to rope in the next customer. Ruby Jennings, owner and operator is ready to retire and is looking for that special someone ready to invest in some authentic roadside hospitality.

If you're interested, please write or call Ruby at the Buckaroo Motel, 1315 W. Tucumcari Blvd. (Old Route 66), Tucumcari, NM 88401-3326, phone (505) 461-1650.

Passport Program

The 2001 New Mexico Vacation Guide will carry the first ad announcing its availability. Each advertiser will have a coupon in the back of the passport that can be redeemed for product/service discounts. We will be soliciting advertisers in Santa Fe, Bernalillo, Tucumcari, Grants and Gallup over the next two months. Visitors are encouraged to stop at each designated site or Museum event along the Route and have their passport stamped, and visit the advertisers' business. Each visitor with a fully stamped passport will be entered in a drawing for an original work of art valued at $500+ commissioned just for this program. All visitors with a completed passport will receive a gift of kitsch from the Museum of New Mexico (items to be determined).

For additional information please contact Barbara Hagood at (505) 476-5105.
