Santa Rosa

Settled along the Pecos River, Santa Rosa is the seat for Guadalupe county. Its current name came from Spanish settler Don Celso Baca who named the area after his wife and Saint Rose of Lima, the first canonized Saint of the "New World." The entry of the Railroad at the turn of the twentieth century transformed the city from an agrarian town into an important transportation service area. The addition of Route 66 running through its main street reinforced that role. The city is known for its artesian, crystal blue lakes, thus its slogan, 'the City of Natural Lakes'. Traveling westward from Santa Rosa Route 66's old alignment took a sharp turn northward to Dilia and Romeroville turning west toward Santa Fe before reaching Las Vegas. Santa Rosa remained on the new east to west alignment after 1937.
