New Mexico Tribal OrganizationsSandia PuebloLying 13 miles North of Albuquerque, along Interstate I-25, Route 66 can still be followed Northward through to the town of Bernalillo. The name of the Pueblo in Spanish means "watermelon" after the hue cast by the sunset on the Sandia Mountains lying directly east of the current settlement. The people of Sandia identify a different source for the name, the Spanish arrivals seeing a a type of gourd resembling a watermelon that was grown at the time by the village. The peoples of Sandia Pueblo are Tiwa speaking people. The Pueblo maintains Bien Mur Indian Market just off I-40 going East on Tramway. The structure was created architecturally to resemble the round circular ceremonial Kiva. It is one of the largest Indian owned trading posts in the Southwest (505) 821-5400. It also maintains a Casino and service station just off I-40. Sandia Pueblo also operates a recreational area, Sandia Lakes, that offer hiking along the Rio Grande, picnic areas, and fishing by permit (505) 897-3971. There is also horseback riding through the bosque at Los Amigos Roundup (505) 898-8173.
