NM Route 66 Cities
Grants
Earliest Spanish settlements in the area predate the Civil War.
In the 1880's the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad set up the "Grants
Camp" named after the three Grant brothers who worked as Railroad contractors.
The town is the seat of Cibola county located approximately half way between
Albuquerque and Gallup. Grants was not only an important railroad town,
in the mid 1900s through the 1970s it was also an important uranium mining
community. Some of the historic Route 66 motels and curio shops still exist
as the highway runs along the Rio San Jose. Route 66 moved west over the
Rio Puerco, through Mesita and past Laguna and Acoma Pueblos, through the
towns of Budville and Cubero and into Grants. The Chamber of Commerce operates
a Web Site, listed below.
