Cochiti Pueblo

Before ascending the La Bajada Mesa at the old Route 66 North/South alignment (no longer maintained), the highway crossed Cochiti Pueblo land. Located midway between Albuquerque (about 45 miles north), and Santa Fe, the community is nestled along the banks of the Rio Grande. The name comes from the Keresan language spoken by its residents. West of Cochiti, down several miles of dirt washboard road, is Tent Rock, so named because of the unusual rock formations and hoodos. The trails are accessible and fascinating to hike through the park. It is in Cochiti that the first Storyteller clay sculpture doll was created in 1964 by Helen Cordero.
