Bernalillo

Prior to settlement by the Spanish, the area now known as Bernalillo in Sandoval County, was comprised of at least two Tiwa speaking Pueblos. Excavations of one settlement can be seen at the Coronado State Monument just off of Route 44. Bernalillo lies approximately 17 miles NE of Albuquerque in Sandoval County. The original alignment of Route 66 passed through Bernalillo from 1926-1937 moving south from Santa Fe past the Pueblos of Cochiti, Santo Domingo, and San Felipe and the town of Algodones into Bernalillo. It continued southward past Sandia Pueblo through Albuquerque and down to Los Lunas, where it again turned northwestward to Grants.
