Albuquerque

Native Americans had long settled the rich, middle Rio Grande River before the arrival of the Spanish. With Coronado's arrival in 1540, the valley began a slow transition to Spanish settlers. Albuquerque has a complex and fascinating history as a cross roads for ranchers, the Camino Real, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and of course, Route 66. Both New Mexico alignments ran through Albuquerque. The Albuquerque metropolitan region is today the largest city in the state, approaching a half million residents, equaling one third of the state of New Mexico's population.
